The opening was so lovely. I've noticed Mappa puts a lot of effort into doing visually stunning ops for their series, no matter what. Very much warranted. As a manga reader I'm perfectly content with this episode, I'm glad more people are going to watch this arc unfold.
6:35 just for even more context (not that this is the only way to interpret it of course), but i like to think of this poem from the context of the All Father Odin. Not as a god but as a man, reflecting and commenting on the lives of Men, as in the Mankind.

Don't worry, rewatching season 1 will not be necessary imo, since this season is a whole new start. Maybe rewatching the last 2 ep of s1 would be good though.

Ok so another comment about the poem at the beginning because it really captivated me, and loved that it was in old Norse too. And yeah the symbolism too. And im not sure what they're telling me to carve on my body, the land, the sea, my enemies, etc, especially with the baby scene and then "carve that warmth in to me". Is it love? And we do know the symbolism of love was also huge in S1, is it blood (sin of man)? I'm really trying to figure that one out.

HÁVAMÁL ,Hávamál
A poem found within the Poetic Edda, a collection of Old Nordic poems. The title translates to "sayings of the high one," and the contents of the poem are attributed to Odin. The Japanese translation, when not simply titled "Hávamál," is known as "the song of Odin" or "the proverbs of Odin." Hávamál is a gnomic poem, meaning that its verses are meant to serve as lessons or advice on customary topics, such as the laws of hospitality for both guest and host.
King Sweyn(Svhen) of Denmark offered Askeladd a stark choice: the security of his homeland Wales, or the life of his master, Prince Canute(Can-oot). Askeladd's answer was immediate: He struck off Sweyn's head. The meeting of military leaders erupted into chaos after this act of regicide(the action of killing a King), but Canute recognized the play at hand, and killed Askeladd himself, thereby accomplishing Askeladd's aim. Canute immediately took the throne. But after witnessing the end of his father figure, Thorfinn was left empty inside. He was eventually sold into slavery to work on a farm.
You asked about why the people buying the slaves would check your teeth. There are many different possible reasonings, the most likely would be to check for scurvy, most slaves who went overseas ate very poorly and were often malnourished/sick and obviously buying a slave that could not fulfil their tasks would be futile. It could also be to check for cracks/damage/missing teeth, if they did not have enough good teeth eating would be hard, negatively affecting their work. Another reason is to check for signs of abuse, if they have a lot of cracked teeth it may mean they have been punished by their previous owners which may indicate they may be a difficult worker. I live in the middle east and I see the people from india Bangladesh Philippines indonesia even from the poor people from Africa and I seethem treated just like slaves ofc they are getting paid but its way less than minimum wage and its been like on purpose so they last long and its very heartbreaking seeing these people running away from their countries because of poverty and dreaming for better life and we take advantage of that its sad that most of them that they only see their parents and family once or twice
and that make me feel grateful and thankful for everything I have and that make me mad that humans dont realize the blisses that they have unless they see the ones who dont have it

I fully believe that if I was enslaved or in a situation where I was about to be enslaved that I would try to kill those that try to enslave me and if that didn't work I would try again at some point they will kill me but no matter because I don't exactly fear death, It would literally be impossible to enslave me… I mean real talk someone pointed a loaded gun at my head once and I told the guy that he was a cunt and to hurry up and pull the trigger he didn't expect this and respected it so he let me go.
