Rain (two versions), by Eivør

Eivør – Rain (Official Music Video)

Eivør – Rain (stripped back acoustic version)

Happy Fun Springtime Series! (1 of 8) Not really though, everybody drowns in a flood. I did a winter series a little over a year ago that was basically me telling a story through song titles of a guy freezing to death in the mountains, so I tried to do something similar here (but with lyrical content). It didn’t start out that way, but after starting things off with a beautiful Eivør ballad the series took a dark turn. I have more songs in my library that deal with apocalyptic rainstorms than I knew, and March 20 is the first day of spring after all. This is quite possibly my favorite Eivør song (though it is very hard to choose). It’s from her classic 2012 album “Room” that deals with the loss of her father; I went through it and realized you’ve heard pretty much the whole thing now (this is the 6th track just from me). The song (and first video) deals with the Faroese stories of “hamferð,” essentially the images of sailors lost at sea appearing in glass or water to loved ones waiting for their return. The Faroe Islands are a deep sea fishing culture, and the first video seems to be set mid-Century, possibly World War II, when a number of Faroese ships and their crews were lost to drifting explosive mines. Anyway, you get to see Eivør’s acting chops, which is just another of her many skills. The second is probably my all-time favorite Eivør video. It’s just her and the bassist/keyboardist you’ve seen many times before doing a live acoustic set, and is such a pure representation of what she does and can bring out in people. Beautiful.
