To briefly explain the secret function, this is self-destruct, which is triggered in the game with the L3 + R3 controller keys and 9S loses his pants and 2B loses his skirt 🤣

It kinda seems like the Machines invading the world, turned the world as we know it to mid-evil times. Yeah these machine lifeforms learn by imitating recorded history (cultural; religious & societal norms).
So I wonder if this story is trying to add weight to what we have taken lightly, like the saying: "If you don't learn from history, you're bound to repeat it".

Fun fact: The girl at 10:20 is called Kainé and the flying books name is Grimoire Weiss. They're one of the main characters of the prequels game to NieR: Automata called NieR Replicant/Gestalt. The red haired ones seems familiar right? 🙂 About them we should get explanations in this anime. At least I hope we do. The siblings at 10:10 is called Yonah and well… Nier. The brothers name is decided by the player but Nier by default. That's the main protagonist of the game. As to why we actually get to see them should get explained in the anime as well.
The anime is still introducing characters and mysteries in the show. We still have a long way to go.
I'd say as a player of both games ur experience in general is bout the same as a 1st time player who's only touched the game this anime is a direct adaptation of. The only HUGE diff in experience is that the references to the OTHER game R much more overt compared to the main source game where u wouldn't notice if somethin WAS tryin to be a reference if u weren't at least told bout it. This is still the setup phase & admittedly we still got a bit of a ways to go before the REAL stuff (if we even get that far here) unless we really rush things but I don't see that happenin soon. Much of the game relies on hindsight so as long as u enjoy it now it'll be HELLA worth later.(again unless they really botch it somehow which will be REALLY easy to do considerin how much they'd have to change to make it all work at the end of this but we'll see)
Seeing kaine, Nier and Yonah from Emile PoV just freeze my heart for a momment, knowing all the hardships they all went together from the prequel while Emile also being the only one alive makes it so sad.
about adam and eve i ve always wandering if adam was the one who came after the first to be slay and i think this episode might be a good beginning about a theory.
Eve speak to adam like a simple brother way but adam seem to want to be called elder brother and even more it seem that adam has the same mimic with his eyes than the one who came second while fighting 9S and 2B i mean the way he closes his eyes to seem more serious.
its only a fun theory not to take too seriously.

the ,,hit us right in the feels this episode" comment was aimed for people who played the very first game in the NieR series. People who only played NieR:Automata or are anime onlies definitely didn't get any of the hacking part besides the familiar red haired characters. Those who have played the first game however, recognized each and every bit of the data gained from hacking, and for certain reasons it's very heartbreaking.
the explanation as to how those robots became peaceful is unique to the anime, including Emil, who is introduced and functions completely differently in the game (not gonna elaborate in case they still go through that in the anime), so the hacking part caught those in the know off-guard as it's not something that appears in the game.
now they made me also want a NieR:Replicant anime to be a thing ._.
as for the L3+R3 thing, after they self destruct in the game 9S is left with shorts while 2B loses the entire skirt (not sure why 9S found it refreshing though). This function is completely optional and you don't have to use it a single time in the game (other than getting the joke endings some of which require you to self destruct in certain places).
