In the beginning Gamera was always looked down as the cheaper Godzilla knock-off, but that all changed when the Heisei Gamera Trilogy was released in the last half of the 90s. In this video we take a look back at what makes this trilogy so good compared to what Godzilla was doing at the same time, and how, for a while, Gamera was the King of the Monsters.

  1. Imo, one of the things that makes the Gamera trilogy better than the heisei Godzilla era was simply the characters (like Asagi and Ayana) were better written than the Heisei Godzilla characters (the only enjoyable character in the Heisei Godzilla movies was Miki Saiagusa). Plus the cinematography were a bit better (like when Gamera and Iris were starting at each other as Kyoto burns).

But both Heisei reboots are masterpieces.

  2. I absolutely don't understand how anyone can like Godzilla vs Biollante. Monster looks fantastic, but movie is as fun as watching paint to dry

  3. It would be amazing to put him in the monsterverse, he’d be a perfect fit because of the whole ancient civilizations theme and heisei Gamera’s connection to Atlantis. Legendary Gamera could be a creation of Atlantis made to be their god and protector against other threats.

  4. I love both gamera and godzilla because their both badass and the heisei era for both of them are awesome

  5. This trilogy is absolutely incredible I really love the gamera hesei trilogy not only are they my favourite kaiju films their one of my favourite films in general I’d even go as far as to say their better than some Godzilla films

  6. I think you're reaching a bit.

The fact that there are over twice as many Heisei Godzilla movies, the quality of Gamera was pretty low. They reused Gyaos in all three films, AoL made the cardinal sin of having the human military be affective against the monsters and there were moments sillier than any Godzilla movie, such as using a game consol to measure an etherial energy.

  7. I liked Gamera better than Godzilla aswell and think he was better in his own game, gameras final fights were also better.

  8. Yeah no, the hesisi era of Godzilla was all fantastic and while yes they fell back on what was safe they still revived the classic monsters like mothra and Ghidorah. They were not only fantastic but also very financially benefiting to toho. Their slip ups being being biollante (though well reviewed) and space Godzilla but we’re still outstanding.

Gamera’s trilogy was also fantastic but comparing the 2 is one and the same. They both did the same and did upped their antics to their max but your bs hate of Godzilla hesiei is kind of sad dude…

  9. Gamera was better then godzilla in some ways! I love both of them! Dream team! Godzilla, gamera, ulterman, and kong! They should be friends! To portect the earth!

  10. So basically, what your saying is that you like Gamera better than Godzilla. Sure, I like Gamera too but more people want to see more Godzilla films than Gamera.

  11. Even tho I don't agree with the gmera heisei trilogy being better than thw godzilla heisei era. I do like theese movies and have a lot of respect for the studio behind gamera to make the franchise darker , more realistic and more emotional .

  12. These films were, are, and always will be some of, if not, the genuine best pieces of kaiju media. Every film feels timeless and holds up gorgeously. Here's hoping Gamera Rebirth at least tries to live up to it

  13. The 90's Gamera trilogy is fantastic. What I love about them is that each movie is a bit different from the other, especially in tone. Kaneko did a fantastic job with these films. They were so good that when Gamera The Brave came out in 2006, I was very disappointed that it was a more of a kid's movie, instead of the serious, adult themes of the 90's trilogy.

  14. Darker and serious doesn't mean better. As much as I love this trilogy I still rewatch the old movies a lot more. They definitely don't put Hesei Godzilla to shame.

  15. Gamera has always been my favorite since I was 14 I'm now 58 always loved those movies and still watch them

  16. Gamera has always been my favorite… always since I was 14 first saw Gamera on mystery science theater many moons ago Gamera rules

  17. Es was a low budget master peace
Out of all of them gamera is my all time favorite
As a young boy I used to catch snapping turtles in a place call van Cortland park
I kept one for a long while before rereleaseing it back to the wilds oh yeah it's name was GAMERA I had no way at that age to know how to determine the sex of a turtle
And since gamera was a snapping turtle I saw it fit sure would like to know how the old guy is doing how big a family he has by now
Oh yeah glory days a young boy and a snapping turtle named gamera

  18. One great thing about the Gamera Heisei series was that while it didn't exactly claim to be in continuity with the old movies, neither did it just ignore them. Several times, people talk as if some version of the previous movies really did happen, but somewhere along the line, Gamera began changing, leading up to this trilogy. That was a ballsy move on their part, and it only worked because the rest of the movie was so good and played it so straight that it didn't feel goofy.

  19. With Gamera Rebirth just being released, he’s done it again. The show’s better than almost everything in recent Godzilla media

  20. Well, Gamerai was always for me a cheap Goji. But after watching this I must see Heisei trilogy, I not suspect that to be this dark and brutal and It suprsie me to see there fight's that bloody and wrestle. But still I prefer Heisei Goji. Oh, in the Heisei propably except of Kiryu and Final Wars (and of course Original) the human plot is watchable and interesting. Like terrorist from vs King Ghidorah or from Destroyah try to cool down Godzilla. Also I like that human compete there with Kaijus, not were just victims but neraly kill Goji some times.

And yea, Heisei Goji was usually beam spam, but damn, Gamera SFX look no less…. hmmm you see it's hard computer effects, like Yonggary from 99. And somewhat was more realistic, without all that spiritual things.

  21. If This were Marvel or DC, Godzilla Is most Definitely Marvel n Gamera DC, not trying to hate on Gamera🙏🏽💯💯🐢🔥🦎🔥

  22. Come on, give the people what they want –
Gamera vs Godzilla. Battle of the Kaiju Titans! 💥🔥💥☄️🔥💥☄️🔥
