【Bruce Lee/ブルース・リー】
(Chinese characters: 李小龍, Lei Siu-lung; English: Bruce Lee) (November 27, 1940 – July 20, 1973) was a Hong Kong Chinese martial artist, martial artist, actor, screenwriter and film producer. He is also known as a martial artist who founded the Jeet Kune Do. His birth name is “Lee Zhen-han” (Lei Zhan-fan, Lee Zhen-fan). His epitaph is “FOUNDER OF JEET KUNE DO”. He has one son and one daughter with Linda Emery. They have a son, Brandon Lee, and a daughter, Shannon Lee.
Lee’s only formal training was in Wing Chun, but he also studied many forms of Northern Chinese martial arts. You can see him performing various kata in the audition footage for The Green Hornet. The tiger kata and dragon kata he performed in the audition were improvised and do not exist in Chinese martial arts.
Joe Lewis, an American karate practitioner, met Lee in 1967 and used Lee’s fighting philosophy and sparring with boxing gloves and headgear, which were introduced in Jeet Kune Do, as a reference. At a karate tournament held on January 17, 1970, a special match was held in which boxing gloves were used for the first time in Los Angeles.
Lewis defeated his opponent Greg Baines by a second round KO, and in 1974 he founded PKA, an American kickboxing organization.
Based on the above historical facts, Joe Louis believes that Bruce Lee is the father of American full-contact karate, or American kickboxing. In the beginning of his instructional video, What Bruce Lee Taught Me, and in the narration of the video of the above fight with Greg Baines, he confessed that he tried to keep in mind the principles that Lee always emphasized. From 1971 to 1988, the STAR (Standardized Tournaments and Ratings) system, which governed the independent rankings of full-contact karate in the U.S., such as PKA and WKA, gave awards to the best fighters and contributors of the year for each year.
