SEGA was kind enough to send me the MEGA DRIVE (Genesis) 2 mini and as I am an obsessive fanboy. I have decided to do a deep dive on the latest mini to see if it holds up!

  1. I’m an absolute sucker for these mini systems. My European version of the Mega drive mini 2 was delivered today and my Japanese one is en route.

  2. The Mega Drive mini 2 sounds better than the original when you played a sample of outrun. This system looks great good games on there. Thinking to get one myself soon.

  3. The only thing that bothers me is that it is exclusive to Amazon and therefore fewer units of the Megadrive 2 are produced

  4. No Haunting, dinosaurs for hire, snatcher, robocop vs terminator…. sigh. Shining force was really the only thing I would be slightly interested in this list.

  5. Great review, I can’t wait for mine to arrive! I really want a Master System Mini for sure – it was my first console, which I still have, and I still find it so much fun to play. A mini of that with a bunch of games I never had would be incredible.

  6. The mold for the western version is different than the japanese one, look at the cartridge bay. It's most likely because of the motherboard.

  7. Personally not interested in going back to the Master System. I'd rather they continue moving forward. 32X and more Sega CD would be nice if they put out a 3rd, but I'm really interested in Saturn and Dreamcast minis. I know they said it would be pricier, but I'd go for it as long as it wasn't too crazy 🙂

  8. Will it be hackable? Does it have a more powerful CPU than the Genesis Mini 1 model? And how much internal storage does it have?

  9. I was hopping for Sega to redo the Saturn because they released initial D on it and not that many people will have the chance to play the games thanks a lot Sega Europe for cutting westerners off

  10. Bearing in mind the age of the games and how many you can put on a small amount of storage, the number of games included is still pathetic for the price.

  11. I just got my shipping notification for this yesterday. 😁 I just can't believe how much I had to pay for this. 🤑 If this ever gets a US retail release later, I'm gonna feel sick for spending so much. 🤢

  12. Dang, I didn’t know they included the ability to switch sound emulator mode! As someone who previously worked on a YM2612 emulator as part of a JavaScript VGM player, I definitely understand how annoying it is to get the nuances down for YM2612 of a Model 1 Genesis vs YM3438 of a Model 2 Genesis. I wouldn’t be surprised if M2 based their emulator from the open-sourced nuked-opn2 project or something.

As for getting one, I already have a Mini 1 and I’m not a fan of the majority of the game selection of the US version of this one, particularly the JP CD games like Lunar not also being included in the US version for whatever reason. If the JP version had the ability to play US English on it, I would be more likely to consider it. The price tag, however, is a bit too high for me right now to just get one now and wait for it to be hackable for more games later on like I did with the PlayStation Classic Mini (only US$30 at GameStop at the time!).

  13. Big Sega fan even in respects of the Saturn being mentioned for the puyo puyo port .

Happy I didn’t get it tho

  14. I want Knuckles Chaotix. I want a mini system that ONLY plays Knuckles Chaotix. It gets left off of every Sonic collection, it deserves it's own system now!

  15. Saturn mini next, I would also love to see them do some arcade mini systems, Sega has such a rich history of arcade games.

  16. A Saturn mini would be an instant buy for me, but your backwards idea is also exciting: A master system mini with bunch of bonus game gear games on it

  17. The review is… questionable in some regards, it almost seems like it goes too "perfect" in many areas, mini consoles are well known to do weirdly in input lag, and you went "yeah, it's very good!" and that's it.

Also, don't put lies on game facts you don't even research properly, and this is the mere reason you are never going to see me checking your channels (which you promoted yourself AT LEAST TWICE IN 5 MINUTES) ever again.

-No, Data East NEVER denied the Chelnov thing, it was controversial for SO MANY other things, and you only need to see the original arcade title screen to wonder why, they publicly apologized (The game is still amazing, I must seriously agree on that, go play Chelnov!)

-No, Locomotive was NOT a game that was in development for the console, instead, some employees at M2 made this (And Sanrin San-Chan, aka Spatter) on their free time for the MegaDrive by the mere situation they just liked the games a lot, in fact, these were promoted as ideas for ports during the "Sega Ages 3DS" era, but SEGA denied those as they were a bit too niche.

-Devi & Pii, yeah, weird game, cancelled game from back in the day from what the official Japanese website mentions

-Star Mobile might be one of the most unique puzzle games and I can see you didn't even try to research it properly; it also was a heavily in development game from back in the day but got released publicly until now.

All in all, thanks for showing how the international release of the mini is, but I'm going to wait for a proper review, from someone that doesn't attempt to look like a guru of gaming when in reality barely did more than 2 seconds of googling.

  18. I didn't purchase the first Megadrive mini, but I have purchased this one and hope to add the games from the first iteration.

  19. I definately want the Saturn but then I am biased as that was the sweet spot console for me, it would need some form of Multiplayer to hit right though even if it meant buying extra pads seperately.

  20. The previously unported games seem a little disappointing gameplay wise but I must compliment M2 on their deep cuts selections. I love stuff like Element Master and Atomic Runner.

  21. What UK power adapter do you use I've tried multiple USB phone ones and it's not working?

  22. I'm confused… why the disappointing facial expression in the thumbnail if you love the thing? Ah right, clickbait 101…

Surprised you didn't mention how Sega went in and removed the Ferrari logo on Outrun. To me, that's the biggest letdown.

That port of Virtua Racing is awesome for those who have played it in depth, great for speedruns. It's an incredible accomplishment for the console.

  23. They've done such a great job with these, I'd gladly pick up whatever they put out next. Master System would probably be the hardest sell for a general audience, while a Dreamcast mini would likely have the most appeal. Might be a bit tricky with four controllers though. I'd personally love to see a Sega Saturn mini as it's library remains the most inaccessible at the moment. I just hope they continue putting these, or comparable collections out for other consoles.

  24. Mine is coming in the mail on the 3rd or so, I preordered it like 2 weeks ago. I'm so excited for an easier way to play Earthworm Jim 2!

  25. Thanks for the review. I instantly bought one after looking at the games list. Covering some of the more expensive, rare shoot em ups / run n guns was enough for me. I might have to resist immediately busting it out of the box when it arrives so my wife can give it to me for Xmas and we can have a cool holiday blast from the past 😁

  26. I'm really loving mine. Playing Night Trap in Japanese is a blast!
The mini console is powered through a USB and I've found it's only reliable when plugged into the mains. Powering it off a tv or laptop doesn't cut it and it shuts off.

  27. I can't believe they finally re-released Ranger X. A game that most people don't have a clue about and it's so, good.
It's just frustrating that it's on such a limited release device and not one of the 500 collections.

It's also great to see a Strike game, Silpheed and Shining Force CD

  28. 9:47 I'm confused… The Mega Drive 1 is supposed to have much more crystal clear audio than the Mega Drive 2, but this shows that the Mega Drive 2 had more clarity in the audio…???

  29. Yeah . . . I think this is gonna sell less than the original Genesis/Mega Drive Mini ultimately.

The first Genesis/Mega Drive Mini didn't break a million units sold*, which is a lot less than the SNES Mini that sold 5.28 million units, and I'm thinking Sega probably hasn't even made a million of the Genesis/Mega Drive Mini 2 systems in total.

I'm guessing it's for a niche of a niche at this point, basically the most devoted Genesis/Mega Drive fans or collectors. But, those people who do buy it will love it, I have no doubt.

*A quick "Sega Gensis/Mega Drive Mini" search online brings up a page that seems to suggest it sold somewhere over 300,000 units.

  30. If you have access to 3 variants of the 60 games, does that mean you have 180 games on here?
