In the eastern part of Hokkaido, Shiretoko Peninsula including Shari Town and Rausu Town, as well as sea area along was registered as World Natural Heritage in 2005.
On the sea of Shiretoko, great scale of floating ice can be seen every winter.
Also as floating ice brings nutrition from the sea, and provides to marine life such as plankton, fishes, seal and steller’s sea eagle here. Many other creatures like brown bear and Hokkaido deer also inhabit in the area.
Endangered rare species blakiston’s fish owl, alpine plant Viola kitamiana and so on can also be found here.
Shiretoko Peninsula is regarded as extremely precious eco-system, and exists as an environment with diversified creatures from the sea to land.
