Asakusa(浅草) is one of Tokyo(東京)’s most famous districts, known for its traditional atmosphere and historical significance. The centerpiece of Asakusa is the Sensoji Temple(浅草寺), Tokyo’s oldest and most visited temple, which attracts millions of visitors each year. The temple is dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon(観音), the goddess of mercy, and the approach to the temple is lined with Nakamise Street(仲見世通り), a bustling shopping street filled with traditional snacks, souvenirs, and crafts that have been sold here for centuries.

Beyond the temple, Asakusa retains much of its old-world charm, with rickshaws, or jinrikisha(人力車), available for hire, allowing visitors to explore the area in a uniquely Japanese way. The district also hosts a number of festivals, the most famous being the Sanja Matsuri(三社祭) held in May, one of Tokyo’s largest and most energetic festivals, celebrating the founders of Sensoji Temple with processions and traditional music.

Asakusa is also a gateway to the Sumida River(隅田川), where visitors can take leisurely boat cruises, offering views of the Tokyo Skytree(東京スカイツリー), Japan’s tallest structure, which stands in stark contrast to the traditional buildings of Asakusa. The mix of old and new makes Asakusa a microcosm of Tokyo itself, where history and modernity coexist harmoniously.
