Tropical Storm Meari has caused heavy rainfall on Japan’s main island of Honshu. On Saturday, it spread north towards the capital Tokyo.
Typhoon Meari made landfall in Shizuoka Prefecture, causing sudden heavy rains and gusty winds over a wide area. More than 72,000 people in the area’s main city of Shizuoka were told to evacuate due to possible landslides and floods. Wind gusts reached up to 100 kilometers per hour.
The Tokyo area was hammered by periodic downpours starting in the late morning. Warnings on high waves in coastal areas were issued for Tokyo, Kanagawa Prefecture, and other nearby areas. Flood, high wind and heavy rain warnings have also been issued for the Tokyo area.
