〈解説〉
河野氏は18歳の時、入学したばかりの大学（慶応）を中退して渡米をすることを決意しました。
しかし、これを聞いた父は大反対しました。
彼の父親は、アメリカにいくなら日本の大学を卒業し、大学院から行くようにと彼を説得しました。
しかし河野氏の決心は固く、彼の父も最終的には同意しました。
なお、太郎氏の周りの殆どが慶応を中退することに反対したため、逆に彼の父は「みんなが反対することをやってみるのも面白い」と言ったとの逸話もあります。
そして彼は、僅か2ヶ月で慶応を中退し渡米し、ジョージタウン大学で比較政治学を学ぶことになります。
さらに、彼は民主党の大統領指名のキャンペーンでアラン・クランストン上院議員のために働きました。 また、アラバマ州のリチャード・シェルビー下院議員の下で 2 年間働いたこともあります。
その経験が彼を成長させ、今の政治家としての資質を磨きました。
この講演では、その前段部分を、ユーモラスに語り聴取から笑いを取っていました。
Toro Kono, Japanese politician
When he was 18 years old, he decided to leave the university he had just entered in Japan and go to America.
However, when his father heard this, his father strongly objected.
His father persuaded him to go to graduate school in US after graduating university in Japan.
But he was determined. Finally his father agreed with him.
Many people around Mr. Taro were opposed to dropping out of Japanese universities, so his father said, “If everyone is against it, it would be interesting to try,” and in the end he turned to support him.
He went to the US, where he attended Georgetown University, and studied comparative politics.
Moreover, he worked for Senator Alan Cranston in his campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. And he also worked for then Representative Richard Shelby of Alabama for two years.
Those experiences made him grow and honed his qualities as a politician.
In this talk, he addressed the topic in a humorous way and got laughter from the audience.
